Marley - |There is absolutely no need for any apologies at all. You've done a jolly fine job and I could not envisage anyone else doing it any better or in any other way.
Whenever anyone creates rules or conditions for an activity that has a competitive element there are bound to be a few who believe that if they were in charge, their rules would be better. You'll never please everyone all of the time, but it seems that you've got it cracked and are pleasing almost everyone.

    Marks for effort - 10/10
    Marks for product - 10/10
Marks for management skills - 10/10

And no - you can't have a pay rise :D

Can I just put my personal feelings aside and just try to give an insight into how things may seem to others? I'm trying to be positive and to show why some people became upset.

Wildflower started creative art on GC. She enthused us and taught us much. Without her we wouldn't have had any creative art on GC and a number of us have greatly enjoyed sharing our creative pictures and techniques

Wildflower's style is to combine images from several pictures to build her own wonderful pictures which many of you have said you admire

We owe Wildflower a vote of thanks

Unlike myself, she was interested in entering the new competition. How do you think she felt when she discovered that someone had made up a rule that specifically barred her style? How would you feel?

Others who had posted many wonderfully imaginative pictures were also adversly effected when it came to a competion. Then we had some hair splitting about when a border became a frame. Again - people felt that they were being penalised and so withdrew their pictures.

I do hope that you can now see that there is another side of the problem and it is not born of malice. It is a bit like entering a fast car in a race and then being told that you must keep it in second gear. Frustrating.

I have said before that taking part in GC competitions is what is important - not winning. Does putting a frame around a picture improve the number of votes it gets? Does it matter and does it matter who wins? Causing people to feel excluded, albeit unintentionally, is the real tragedy.

    I wish you well [IMG]

Marley, there is certainly no need for you to apologise as Dave W says. You were asked by Nathan to take over the running of the competitions as he had other important things to do as we have said before...

And as you have so rightly said and MD has also added that it is not an easy job and not one that would suit everybody....What is needed on here is a bit of patience and support for everyone on here as we all strive towards the same objective ie;some really good pieces of Photography and Art work in all competitions that we can all sit and enjoy, praise and talk about and to look forward to each months topic so that we can all get snapping and clicking.

So once again I say a big Thankyou for everything that you,Nathan the Moderators and Forum Members who I have become friends with in making this a great site to be part of...

    Thankyou

    For clarification?

    The "Creative Competition".
Take a photo and do what you like with it. You can take things out, but don't put any thing (i.e. image) in that wasn't there in the first place."

Does a "simple border" now mean a border of more than one colour or series of borders? I refer to Petal's entries

"but don't put any thing (i.e. image) in that wasn't there in the first place."

Ah well - there's the rub...

I'm sure Marley will be very glad that you're helping her in this difficult job, Hornbeam.

Do have a look at this - it makes the whole thing rather funny!

May I suggest that people read the amended guidelines (hb - there is now nothing about borders) and try them for a month or so. They can if necassary be reviewed at that time if there are any problems.

Meanwhile may I also respectfully suggest that this thread is closed for now and we just get on with enjoying both the competition entries and the forum.

Fran, HB is referring to the original photo comp, where it still states (I've just checked) that a simple border is permitted - not more. Can't remember the exact words.

I don't see how this thread can be regarded as closed, as it is for suggestions for how the creative comp should work.

I agree with the sentiments I believe are behind what you say, though, and would like to reiterate what I said earlie - let's just get on with it, folks.

This needs to stay open for CONSTRUCTIVE comments, so the competition can meet the needs of the members.

Sorry Dendy - I did say the amended guidelines - but you got my sentiments spot on.

[IMG] Yes, let's just get on with it all now.. I am sure we can put this behind us... Thank you all for your support through all this & your kind words... [IMG]

[IMG] I have a suggestion to make in readiness for next month's competition..

[IMG] I suggest we find another name for it..
[IMG] I think in order to avoid any more confusion with the creative art section..... We should re-name from the "creative" comp to something else i.e. "Enhanced Photo comp" or "Altered Images"... I would like you all to put your thinking caps on & see what you can come up with for our new title... [IMG] Thanks... ;) [IMG]

With respect - it doesn't matter what you call it if the rules are excessive and not owned by all who want to participate.

How nice it would have been if GC had not rushed in to a new February competition, but instead had said in January:

1...Here is an idea for a new competition
    2...Here are the draft rules
3...Your comments are invited now so that we can agree the format and commence in March
4...Any unresolved conflict regarding rules and format will be decided by majority vote"

Just an observation - nothing more...not "getting" at anyone.
