Couch grass is a real nightmare to remove and digging it up works if you get every single last piece of root out but this is practically impossible.

My way of removing it is with a strong weedkiller that doesn't target just broad leaf plants as some do not kill grass. Bayers Ground Clear or Super Strength (or both mixed together) work well but it takes a while.

The problem is, it couch grass grows up inside shrubs and other plants and it's risky spraying near these so my method is to carefully pull it from under shrubs taking care not to snap it and push the offending grass over and weight it down with soil or stones, then carefully spray it up really close up with strong week killer. It seems to work better when the grass is longer and has the characteristics long blades rather then just the thin, growing stems.

I leave it weighed down and after a few weeks, it dies off but multiple attempts may be necessary to completely eradicate the root system. It seems to be dying back now in a lot of places so I'd leave it until next spring and give it a good blasting otherwise you'll probably just waste your weed killer.
